The lake is 2.347 square miles, has a maximum depth of 100 feet, and is fed by the Wallowa Mountains and drained into the Wallowa River.
A series of Pleistocene glaciers formed the lake. It is impounded by high moraines, which create a ribbon-like shape. Forests and mountains surround the lake, and the scenery is stunning.
